Why do we celebrate Fasching, Fastnacht and Karneval?
Celebrations before Lent.
The most influential tradition is probably based on the customs of the Catholic Church. In the Middle Ages, people were not allowed to eat meat, cheese, milk, lard, butter or fat during the long period of Lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter. And yes, what could be more obvious than having a good time beforehand? Shrove Tuesday was celebrated with music, dancing and plenty of food and alcohol.
Chasing away the winter.
The ancient Germanic tribes chased away the winter spirits at the end of the cold season with loud, colourful festivities. They put on masks and made noise with bells and drums. Here in Fiss, too, there is an old custom called ‘Fisser Blochziehen’
Role reversal.
The third origin lies in ancient Rome. Here it was customary to swap roles for a day. Servants became masters and masters had to serve their slaves. The slaves were also allowed to tell jokes and criticise. Today, there are so-called carnival speeches, in which everyone and everything that has caused trouble over the year is dealt with: politicians, neighbours, society.
