Serfaus

Hexensee and Gmairer See

Panoramic hike.Lake hike

Route description

We take the free SFL shuttle to Serfaus, the starting point of our hike. The gondola lift takes us to the Kölner Haus (1,965 m) and on to the Lazid (2,346 m). Over the Scheid, the trail leads us slightly uphill on the right-hand side of the mountain over some scree fields to the Arrezjoch (2,587 m).

After a slight descent and subsequent ascent, we pass the Hexensee lake and reach the Hexensee hut (2,585 m). Just a few steps below is the deep green Hexensee lake, above it at 3,034 m is the Hexenkopf and in between, at 2,585 m, is the small wooden Hexenseehütte hut. From the Hexensee hut, we hike a little further to the idyllic Gmairersee lake.

Special features

Magical and exciting stories are told here in the Masner region. Does the name come from the lake around which the witches danced and then disappeared or is the majestic witch's head the namesake? No one knows for sure.

What is known, however, is that the Hexensee hut is one of the most original and rustic wooden huts in the area. Pure idyll and mountain experience. From the small terrace, it is not uncommon to watch the ibex dancing agilely back and forth on the rock faces. The Hexenseehütte belongs to the DAV, Rhineland/Cologne section.
