A soothing ritual: smoking incense during the smoke nights
Other
The gentle scent of resins, flowers and herbs that wafts through the rooms calms the senses, relaxes the body and mind and invites you to pause for a moment. Incense burning is an ancient tradition in the Alps - especially during the "Rauhnächte" between Christmas and Epiphany on January 6th. A ritual that not only fills the rooms, but also clears the mind.
Rest time at home
The gentle scent of resins, flowers and herbs that wafts through the rooms calms the senses, relaxes the body and mind and invites you to pause for a moment. At ****S Hotel Chesa Monte, we take our guests on a fragrant journey to a custom that is mindful, loving and calming. A big thank you to the Zammer Kräuterhex for her inspiration!
Rough nights - magical nights
The Rauhnächte are regarded as special nights in which animals „speak“ and people can take a look into the future. Traditionally, people smoke their houses and yards during this time. The Rauhnächte begin on the night of December 21 (St. Thomas night) or at Christmas at the latest and end on January 6. There are a total of twelve nights, sometimes also called "the twelfths", with the nights of 21 December, 24 December, 1 January and 6 January being particularly emphasized.
Smoking - a ritual for home and farm
When smoking at Christmas, delicate smoke rises, fills the room with a pleasant smell and symbolically drives away all negativity. Whether this really drives away evil spirits is a matter of opinion - but the effect on our senses is undeniable. In Catholic families, this is often done prayerfully; elsewhere, a simple saying accompanies the house cleaning: „Bad luck out, good luck in“. On farms, stables are fumigated to protect the livestock.

When to smoke at Christmas?
Incense burning is particularly suitable during the incense nights, ideally on December 24, at Christmas or between the holidays. Every puff of smoke, every fragrant breath creates an atmosphere of security, peace and mindfulness - a ritual that pampers body, mind and soul in equal measure.
A visit to Chesa Monte, participation in our incense evenings and the knowledge of the cleansing energy of incense make the Advent and Christmas season a fragrant, magical experience that lingers on for a long time.
