Every year on Carnival Thursday and Shrove Tuesday, the fifth season starts in Fiss - colorful, cheerful and full of fun. Now it's time to joke, laugh and of course dress up. If you fancy dressing up creatively, you should definitely take part in our traditional dressing up competition. The most beautiful, most creative or funniest costume will be awarded a prize - the prize: an unforgettable stay at Chesa Monte. Children are also welcome to take part and will receive a small gift for their efforts.
Why do we celebrate Fasching, Fastnacht and Karneval?
Celebrations before Lent
The roots of this tradition lie in Catholic customs. In the Middle Ages, Lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter was very strict: meat, cheese, milk and fat were taboo. So it's no wonder that the days leading up to Lent were rounded off with music, dancing, plenty of food and drinkß – the so-called Fastnacht.
Chasing winter away
The ancient Germanic tribes drove away the winter spirits at the end of the cold season. They celebrated the beginning of spring with loud bells, drums and colorful masks. This custom also lives on in Fiss – at the traditional „Fisser Blochziehen“, the dark season is still symbolically driven away today.
Role reversal
Even in ancient Rome, people swapped roles once a year. Servants became masters, masters had to serve. Slaves were also allowed to tell jokes and criticize. This tradition gave rise to the Büttenreden, in which today, with humor and mischief, everything that has disturbed the past year is settled - from politics to neighborhoods.
A carnival vacation at Chesa Monte combines fun, tradition and community. Food, music, dancing and culinary highlights make the fifth season an unforgettable experience for the whole family. Those who take part will experience carnival in Tyrol in a particularly authentic and cheerful way.
